Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring linear ​polysaccharide, widely distributed in human tissues, where it constitutes the major part of the extracellular matrix. It is mostly found in epithelial, connective and neural tissues, and therefore plays important biological roles in tissue such as the skin and the articular cartilage.

​As the major component of the synovial fluid, hyaluronic acid assumes an important role in the viscoelastic properties of the articular cartilage, improving absorption of shocks, as well as lubrication of the joints. Osteoarthritis is characterized by both a decrease in the concentration of hyaluronic acid and a reduction of its molecular weight, which may lead to an increase of pain and a loss of joint functions.
